Under California's Constitution and laws, the five members of the Board of Supervisors serve as the legislative and executive body of Marin County. The Supervisors also serve as the governing board of the Open Space District,Housing Authority, Redeveloment Agency, Transit District, Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, County Free Library, and various other local entities. Within limits prescribed by the State's Constitution and laws, the Board enacts ordinances, determines policies, adopts annual budgets, fixes salaries, is responsible for ensuring that mandated functions are properly discharged, and supervises the activities of County departments.

Embolden Yourself – Expand Your Plant Palette and Design a “Secret Garden”!:  The Speaker: Piotr Mazurek, horticulturist, San Francisco garden designer and owner of Garden Fantasia, specializes in dramatic container gardens and garden renovations combining the bold, the unusual and the extraordinary to create his “secret gardens”.   

The Program:  Very often our gardens need “just a little something” to spice them up, to enliven them or to create a little drama.  Or maybe there is a small space that seems not quite big enough to create a garden but you want to look out on green.  Come and hear Piotr discuss how to develop new and inventive eyes to examine your garden and how to create excitement in it using unusual containers or bold and unusual plant choices. He will show slides of some of his fabulous garden creations as well as suggesting some of his favorite exotic plant choices. This will be a wonderful and stimulating evening to get your creative gardening juices flowing!Garden Design

  Introduction to Beekeeping:  The Program: Serge Labesque will introduce participants to the bee colony and to beehive management.  You will learn the annual cycle of a beehive, honey bee and queen bee behavior, the necessary tools and equipment, honey flow and harvesting, swarming, and pests, diseases and enemies.  The class will visit and observe the hives on site at the Indian Valley Organic Farm.

The Speaker: Serge Labesque is a passionate beekeeper who maintains bee colonies in Sonoma County.  He practices beekeeping through techniques that allow beekeepers to be self-sufficient practitioners by relying on the strengths of local strains of bees and without using any treatment for pest and disease control.  Serge is an active member of the Sonoma County Beekeepers Association and teaches beekeeping classes at Santa Rosa Junior College and many other venues.  He was the recipient of the Western Apicultural Society 2006 Thurber Award for Inventiveness.

Additional information:  The class will take place in the farm classroom (Miwok 214) and on the Indian Valley Farm.  Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early to park and walk to the classroom.  Attendees should be prepared to walk between the classroom and the Farm and are asked to bring a waste-free lunch.

  Rural Roads Educational Webinar Series:  Objectives of the Webinar Series

    Provide a broad overview of the environmental issues associated with rural roads in California.
    Describe the fundamental principles of rural road construction, re-construction and operations.
    Describe practices used to minimize the environmental impacts of road construction, operations and maintenance.
    Review methods used for road assessment and inventory to identify problems and maintenance or re-construction or restoration needs.

There will be three series offered over the coming months. The first will cover environmental issues and constraints associated with roads, fundamentals of road design and operation and regulations affecting rural roads. The second series will cover road drainage alternatives, stream crossings, road maintenance and erosion control practices. The third series will cover road assessment, remedial and restoration treatments and treatment and maintenance costs. Presenters will include specialists from universities, resource agencies and private industry.

Housing Authority:  The Marin County Housing Authority is separate and distinct from HUD, from county government, and from other county and state agencies - much like a special district. The Housing Authority Bpard of Commissioners currently consists of seven members - the five members of the Board of Supervisors, and two public housing tenants. Marin Housing operates programs in the incorporated areas of Marin under Cooperation agreements with the local towns and cities.
